London Fashion Week – Exclusive backstage report and Amanda’s post-show interview

We hope you enjoy our backstage movie, taken behind the scenes at Amanda Wakeley’s SS/10 show at London Fashion Week, Somerset House.

We are all feeling tired but very proud and happy after a truly amazing show. Full footage from the catwalk will be available in our Runway Archive section very soon. We will let you know when.

In the meantime, here is an exclusive with Amanda as she looks back at her show…

Amanda Wakeley

‘’There was a lot resting on me as it was my first show in over a decade being in full ownership of the brand. So on top of the usual pressures of getting a show on the runway, there was the additional pressure of my own expectations of what I could do.

Backstage, Malcolm [Edwards – genius hair creative] had created an incredible look for the girls, referencing our inspiration of Indian women. Their hair was casually plaited and wrapped around their heads – I particularly loved it as Malcolm worked each girl’s hair individually according to her face. I adore that sort of perfectionism, not to mention brilliance.

Sharon [Dowsett – make-up artist extraordinaire] referenced the same inspiration to create a beautiful smudged kohl eye. It looked effortless, believable and truly beautiful.

The three-hour build-up to the show always flies by, and before you know it first looks are being called and the adrenaline flows. We really needed 20 models to ease the pressure on backstage changes, but had only found 18 who had the right look. So we went with just 18  to ensure continuity in the look of the girls despite this being the high-pressure option. This is the right thing to do but created some super hairy moments backstage – trying to get the belt twisted around at speed and double-buckled was particularly challenging.

Behind the scenes was super stressful and a mad blur. Before I knew it the girls were lining up for the finale and then I was walking out into the bright lights for the audience reaction. It was a packed house and the applause was incredibly warming. Backstage hugs and kisses all round – and massive relief, not to mention the need for a calming double shot of vodka!  But this is why I do what I do, the reviews have been great and I couldn’t have done it all without my fantastic team around me.”

Roll on the Amanda Wakeley AW/10 show!
