19.05.20 | Celebration dressing…Saturday's Musings…

This time of being in lockdown has been unique in so many ways... I for one have never witnessed the empty streets of London during daylight, and long gone are those 4am moments when the streets were empty… I found myself pondering how to both capture and also to celebrate this extraordinary sight… and then I had a little idea… I approached a former Wakeley Woman, the gorgeous dancer Kate Byrne and asked her if she would be interested in capturing some of the iconic parts of London, not just #wearingwakeley but doing what she does so exquisitely… celebrating life through her glorious movement… celebrating the moment… surely that is something we have all been reminded to do during this time… the birdsong, the sunshine, the Facetime… I hope you enjoy these images of Kate…

At a time of year when we would normally be thinking about Celebration Dressing… for weddings… for Ascot … for Wimbledon… for Eid…f or our holidays… I wanted to pause and look at those beautiful options…. We may not be wearing them for those occasions this year but what if we were? Also, surely gone are the days when we indulge in a piece for one specific event… our choices should have more longevity now…

I was reminded this in a beautiful email I received from a client in response to one of the newsletters… I wanted to share as it highlights the importance of falling in love with a piece that you may not necessarily “need” at that moment but you instinctively know will be a FOREVER piece… it always  feels a little strange to say to a customer “it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the event for the dress… trust me you don’t want to be buying a dress for an event in a hurry so if you find a dress that makes your heart sing… I promise you that before you know it you will be asking yourself what you would have done without it?!”

'I have been a loyal admirer since I joined a professional membership event in your flagship store 10 years ago. That evening when interviewed in front of a small audience you shared your personal story and the fight for your company’s name. You had me at hello. Within a couple of hours I had purchased my first AW item, which I still wear with great pleasure. While in the fitting room I remember you telling me that I simply had to have it….And it was a fabulous decision' …and 10 years later she says she is still wearing said dress which gives me great pleasure to know…

Thinking about celebrations… its Hugh’s birthday weekend and we would normally spend it in St Tropez and have a long celebratory lunch with a bunch of friends at Club 55… obviously we aren’t doing that so I will be doing my best to recreate his favourite 55 menu... Salad de Pamplonne… heavenly fresh tomatoes, soft goats cheese and mint topped with the most perfect French dressing (I will try), whatever fish I am able to lay my hands on, barbequed with fennel and potato slices roasted with way too much olive oil … and to top it all off my version of their chocolate torte (which is probably a riff of the River Café chocolate nemesis cake)… no candles…just a few freshly picked camelias to decorate (if it goes to plan I will share a snap on Instagram)… and some local strawberries (the likes of which I have never tasted)… lashings of the thickest double cream and a piscine of Ruinart Blanc de Blanc…or maybe two … and the ability to sleep it all off in the sun…

This weekend marks Eid Mubarak and to those of you who are celebrating I wish you a Happy New Year… it’s a new start, a new moon and hopefully more celebratory times ahead for us all…

And if you are not celebrating anything in particular this weekend why not just celebrate the moment…

Hoping you are safe and well

Sending love
