Continuing on with our #WakeleyWellbeing series, we had the pleasure of chatting with the founder of The Organic Pharmacy, Margo Marrone, in an intimate gathering at our flagship store in the heart of West London.
Join us as Margo discusses what skincare ingredients to steer clear from, how SPF’s are damaging the world’s coral reefs and how diamonds really are a girl’s best friend...
You started as a Saturday girl in your local pharmacy, and then trained as a pharmacist – what was it that interested you to start your career in pharmacy?
“I used to watch the pharmacists work with natural medicines which was still part of a pharmacy, so they would use tincture of Belladonna – those beautiful brown bottles, lined up in the front of the pharmacy, similar to the potions room in Harry Potter – and that’s what I really loved, I wanted to find out what each tincture did..."
How did you find developing your business, The Organic Pharmacy, in the beginning? Were there any particular challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? How did your customers react to organic pharmaceuticals?
“When you start a business it takes all your focus and energy. There are also a lot of unknowns, and you must be ready to face 15 hour days. The Organic Pharmacy is a combination of all my ethics, beliefs and passion.“
Tell us more about the science of your products- are there any toxins and chemicals that we should stay away from?
“There are always ingredients you should be aware of like parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde releasing preservatives, and now aluminium – all of which have been linked to cancer. It’s important to know that what you put on your skin is just as important as what we put in our bodies, because our skin is our largest organ and we can absorb up to 60% of what is put on it if the moleculesare small enough."
Skincare and the sun are really big topics at the moment! Recently chemicals have been banned in sun creams in Australia and Hawaii – how do you think this will change sun care in the future? What organic materials does your SPF range use that hep to protect us from the sun?
"Our mineral SPF are 100% environmentally friendly, which is so important when you understand the damage that chemical sun creams are doing to aquatic life like coral. We use Titanium Dioxide & Zinc Oxide, which act in a completely different way to chemical sunscreens and sit on top of the skin to reflect away the rays of the sun. In early May last year, Hawaii became the first US state to pass a bill banning sunscreens that are harmful to coral reefs, and the Australian government was soon to follow. We’re very hopeful that with these new laws we will start to see a change for the better towards mineral sun creams using ingredients that don’t damage humans or the oceans.“
Diamonds are for sure a girl’s best friend! Can you tell us more about your Rose Diamond range and does it really have diamonds in?!
“The idea behind the Rose Diamond collection was to use the most high tech clinically proven natural ingredients to help the skin look smoother, firmer, radiant and more even toned. The unique combination of ingredients, including shimmering, multi-dimensional diamond dust, give our Rose Diamond collection instant, visible results with a sense of luxury.”
